Located in the Setagaya Ward of Tokyo, The Kidosaki House was designed to accommodate three separate households including a couple and their parents. The house is designed as multi-unit housing allowing for privacy but enabling the families to live together. The approach to the house curves gently away from the street directing circulation into the courtyard at which point two sets of steps diverge: one descending into the courtyard and the entrances to two of the living units while another ascends to the couples apartment. The courtyard and an open space on the third floor feature trees and plants similar to those growing on the site prior to the house's construction. These bring a sense of historical continuity and refuge in an urban environment to the residents.

The images above depict the first steps of creating a three-dimensional Revit model. Floor plans obtained during precedent research were imported into AutoCad and then traced. The resulting line work forms a simple template from which the locations and relationships between walls, doors, windows, and other structural elements can be determined. This line work was then imported into Revit where it formed the basis of the three-dimensional model seen above. Thus far only the first floor of the model has been completed. The walls, while true to their dimensions, have not yet had materials assigned to them.

The renderings above show the model complete with materials, furniture, and lighting. One of the greatest aspects of working with Revit 2009 is the Mental Ray rendering engine which replaced the old Accurender engine used in previous editions of Revit (example of an Accurender rendering). Overall I have to say that I am very happy with the quality of the renderings, especially the interior, nighttime views.
